Arline Lillian Avrick was born in 1928 as youngest of three children to Hyman and Nehama Avrick in Rock Island, Illinois, where her father was a businessman and her parents active pillars of their cultural and economic community.
From a young age Arline was drawn to intellectual and academic pursuits and — unusually, for a woman of her generation — chose to pursue a career in medicine. That career introduced her to her future husband, Dr. Malcolm M. Martin and together they operated a clinical and research practice for over 40 years at Georgetown University Hospital. During which they co-authored studies, textbooks and dozens of articles advancing the diagnosis and treatment of endocrinological illnesses and cared for hundreds of patients; some from infancy until parenthood.
Arline’s interests extended to fine art, literature, classical music, opera and travel and she was devoted to the flourishing of Jewish identity and culture. Together with her academic and professional accomplishments, Arline raised a daughter, Jennifer, and two sons, Nicholas and Karl.
