Gloria Gridley passed on in her sleep the night of Sept. 14. She is the beloved daughter of the late Morris and Sari Miller; sister of Sheila Young and Jeff Miller; beloved wife of Yaakov Gridley and mother of Maury Gridley; also survived by many loving family members and friends.
Graduate of University of Maryland and Georgetown University; worked in microbiology, later in cancer epidemiology at the National Cancer Institute; research covered a wide range of cancers and variety of risk factors for cancer, particularly occupation, nutrition and medical conditions. Actively collaborated with colleagues. Developed large databases to be epidemiologic resources and provided technical assistance to researchers around the world in using these resources. Published 170 articles in scientific journals. Devoted life to cancer research.
A scientist and a feminist; a respected leader and board member in Graduate Women in Science, both in the local chapter and in the national organization; co-author of 87-year history of the organization; instrumental in promoting girls entering scientific fields; a generous mentor, teaching and helping future researchers in the cancer field. Served on the Rockville Science and Technology Commission. Volunteered with Washington Statistical Society in the Quantitative Literacy Program; NIH Adventures in Science to promote science among youth.
Loved contra dancing and square dancing; board member of local dance club; traveled all over North America in pursuit of dances. Board member of local Hadassah chapter. Active member in local Red Hats chapter.
