Kudos to the Washington Jewish Week for enlightening us to the complex realities that the United States and Israel face in launching an invasion of its most dangerous adversary. President Trump seems to believe that this military action will result in the Iranian regime throwing up its hands in an unconditional surrender and that the world will then live happily ever after.
Although the biggest fear has been Iran’s nuclear arsenal, why wasn’t it “obliterated,” as President Trump put it, during last summer’s joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes? As dangerous as a nuclear strike would be, the conventional threats from Iranian proxies in Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon and elsewhere have already resulted in casualties for U.S. soldiers stationed throughout the Middle East, as well as to Israeli civilians living throughout Israel. So, any future agreement with a future government of Iran should seriously address these conventional threats, as well as the nuclear one.
