This letter is in response to the editorial titled “Weaponizing the Word ‘Genocide,'” which ran in the Aug. 7 issue of Washington Jewish Week.
The present situation in Gaza distresses me, and I am ashamed.
Whether Israel is committing genocide or not no longer matters right now. People in Gaza starve, and the area has been obliterated. Enough is enough.
The world has seen what has occurred — the Gaza Strip is dust, and the people are desperate. I understand the arguments for Israel’s security, the insidious nature and actions of Hamas, and the dangerous bias against Israel throughout the world. I never would condone what happened on Oct. 7.
There must be a cease-fire, reliable food aid and rebuilding in Gaza immediately. There are many Palestinians and Israelis committed to peace. It is essential that these experienced human rights activists and former government officials be allowed to facilitate leadership in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cohorts are destroying the only true democracy in the Middle East. Israelis, Palestinians and all Jews will continue to suffer grave consequences unless change occurs.
