Local Jewish community leaders expressed hope and gratitude in response to the news of a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington released a statement welcoming the news of the Jan. 15 hostage agreement, which will see the release of dozens of hostages from Gaza after 465 days of captivity.

“We are deeply relieved that these hostages will finally be coming home after 15 long months,” the statement read. “At the same time, we cannot rest until every hostage is reunited with their family. We hope this agreement will be a positive step forward in efforts to establish a sustainable and lasting peace.”

Ron Halber, the CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, shared this sentiment.

“Following Hamas’ barbaric terrorist attack on October 7, 2023 which slaughtered 1,200 innocent Israeli civilians, kidnapped hundreds and injured thousands more, and precipitated a devastating war, the ceasefire agreement announced today offers real possibilities and hope for the eventual return of all remaining hostages and an end to hostilities,” Halber wrote in the statement.

He thanked elected officials in the Biden administration for working for months to finalize this cease-fire agreement and officials from the incoming Trump administration, Egypt and Qatar.

Halber added that as soon as this weekend, the Israelis held by Hamas may “finally start regaining their freedom.”

“With our joy that these individuals will be reunited with their loved ones, however, is the recognition that these captives and their families have endured an unimaginable trauma,” he wrote. “To them we pledge our unending love, support, and hope for a swift recovery.”

In his statement, Halber recognized the families of loved ones who have been killed over the past 15 months in the Israel-Hamas war, and acknowledged that many of the hostages being returned as a result of this agreement are likely deceased.

He closed the statement by urging the international community to ensure that “all parties honor their obligations under each phase of the agreement,” such as quickly distributing humanitarian aid to those impacted and prohibiting Hamas from breaking the cease-fire agreement.
