In Maryland's 4th congressional district, Donna Edwards is seeking to unseat Democrat Al Wynn, a stalwart in his support for Israel. Edwards, who came close to defeating the incumbent in the 2006 primary, is concentrating her efforts on Wynn's Iraq war vote and his corporate support. (Like many representatives who had voted for the Iraq war resolution, Wynn now says it's time to plan a pullout.)
Undoubtedly, there are many Jewish voters who agree with Edwards on Iraq, as well as on numerous other issues. She's strong on the environment, health care and a woman's right to choose, all of which have resonance in the Jewish community. We don't know, however, what the Jewish community thinks of her stance on Israel. That's because, unlike Wynn whose voting record is public, her position remains a question mark.
During the past month, Washington Jewish Week has been unable to secure an interview with her, despite numerous calls to her campaign. Sources tell us that Jewish organizations also have reached out to her campaign and have been unable to set up a meeting with the candidate.
So, Ms. Edwards, if you do unseat Wynn and go on to win the general election, as you no doubt would do in such a heavily Democratic leaning district, you will face numerous votes involving Israel and the Middle East. Your answers to our questions will give voters an indication of the positions you would take in the House:
What, Ms. Edwards, is your position on a two-state solution for the Israelis and Palestinians?
What are your views of the Bush peace plan?
Would you support direct negotiations with Hamas?
Do you support continued foreign aid to Israel? With, or without conditions?
Would you set conditions for aid to the Palestinians?
Will you defend Israel's right to keep its character as a Jewish nation?
What is your position on the Palestinian "right of return"?
We know that your opponent has strongly supported Israel and its right to exist as a Jewish state. Though his district has just a few small concentrations of Jewish residents, he has made himself available for meetings with the Jewish community.
Ms. Edwards, are you prepared to do the same?
