There's the "king of the cantors" -- Yossele Rosenblatt -- in his screen test to portray Al Jolson's father in the first "talkie," The Jazz Singer, a role he eventually turned down; Mordechai Hershman, a tenor who turned down an offer from the Metropolitan Opera in New York; Gershon Sirota, the cantor at the Great Synagogue in Warsaw, who toured the U.S. and whose audience included Enrico Caruso; and Moishe Oisher, a Yiddish film matinee idol, who resembled Errol Flynn and was a High Holiday cantor.
