Micah Isaac Krichevsky, a research biologist, passed away peacefully in his home on the evening of May 14.
Micah was born to David and Dora Krichevsky in Chicago in 1931, and raised in New Haven, Connecticut. As an undergraduate studying biology at the University of Connecticut, he married his wife Elaine on June 22, 1952. He then went on to receive a master’s and a doctorate in dairy science from the University of Illinois.
Micah joined the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service as a commander in 1958. He then transferred to the civil service at the National Institutes of Health as a biochemist and a microbiologist, with an interest in human rights in science. Micah served as a Section Chief at the National Institute for Dental Research from 1967 until his retirement in 1992.
Beginning in 1966, he traveled around the world consulting with international biomedical organizations, as well as for pleasure with his family.
After retiring from the federal government, Micah opened his own company, Bionomics International, a nongovernmental organization that focused on the intersection of biological information and technology.
He was a prolific researcher, publishing at least 137 articles in scientific journals and co-authoring the book “Coding Microbiological Data for Computers.” He also applied for at least one patent.
Micah received an award from the American Society of Microbiologists in 2012 for demonstrating “his commitment to the full participation and advancement of women in science and microbiology.”
His hobbies included donating blood, which he did more than 100 times during his lifetime as a universal donor and serving as a fencing coach. He enjoyed both hosting and visiting friends and colleagues from around the world. Micah was a technophile and loved animals, especially dogs.
Micah is survived by his loving wife Elaine Krichevsky, brother Thor Krichevsky (Tanya), sister Rita Krichevsky, his children Evan Krichevsky (Nancy Heller) and Tamar Krichevsky (Mike Rosen), his grandchildren Aliza Morris (Michal) and Jared Krichevsky (Sarah Hirsch), his great-grandson Erick Morris, and various niblings and grand-niblings.
