Michael A. Smilow of Chevy Chase, Maryland passed away on Oct. 9 at the age of 88.
He was born in Washington, D.C. His parents were Leo and Anna Smilow. His brother Joel passed away several years ago. Michael graduated from BCC High School and Johns Hopkins University. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was commissioned as a 2nd LT in June 1960 and resigned as a captain in 1968. His 45-year career in housing and mortgage finance included executive positions in both the private and public sectors involving mortgage finance, real estate investments and HUD. He retired from Fannie Mae.
Then, he traveled the world as a consultant for the IFC, a part of the World Bank. He served on public and private boards of directors including Children’s Hospital, RMIC, Mellon Bank of Washington and Telebank. Michael is survived by his wife Barbara Goodhart Smilow. They were married for 65 loving and fulfilling years. They enjoyed three wonderful children, David (Tracey), Lisa Smilow Opsahl (Michael) and Marc (Jill, of blessed memory), nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
