Founded in 1980, Rockville’s New Wave Salon and Spa hustles and bustles with such diverse clientele and staff that it’s colloquially known as “the United Nations.”
Danny Sayag, the owner of the salon, said New Wave offers hair care, lash extensions, nail and makeup services, waxing and skincare treatment: “It’s a full-service salon.”
Born in Morocco, Sayag was raised in Israel and has built a client base of many Hebrew speakers and Jewish locals.
“We have specialists who have been uniquely trained to cut and style curly hair,” Sayag said. “There’s a lot of curly hair in the Jewish community, so there’s representation here.”
Many of New Wave’s stylists have worked there for decades and love what they do.
“The camaraderie [and] togetherness of staff is really unique,” Sayag said. “They’re very, very talented. These are people who have been working there for 20, 30-plus years — some are new — but they’re experts in their field and take their craft seriously and enjoy being together day in and day out.”
He added that the shampoo assistants give “the best head massages you’ve ever had in your life.”
More than a place to unwind and relax, New Wave Salon and Spa is also a trusted place to get spruced up for a special occasion. Sayag’s wife, Paula, said a New Wave stylist came to her son’s wedding venue to do the bridal party’s hair and makeup. It was the same stylist who did Paula’s makeup for her own wedding.
“They did my hair and makeup so beautifully,” Paula Sayag said.
This same level of care is applied to everyone who walks through the salon’s doors, according to the Sayags.
“We want clients to walk out feeling so confident, so happy,” Danny Sayag said.
