Ruth Elena Weiss, 83, daughter of Isaac and Guellermina Goldstein, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 17. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Mario; her daughter Dana Wershiner (Eric); her son David Miranda (Elizabeth); her son Michael Weiss (Dana) and her 8 grandchildren. Ruth was born and raised in Santiago, Chile where she pursued her love of teaching. She focused her Hebrew education at the Machon Greenberg (the Hayyim at Machon Greenberg Institute for Teachers for the Diaspora) in Jerusalem, graduating in 1962 with a degree in Jewish education.
After emigrating from Chile to the United States in early 1970s, and eventually settling in Germantown, Maryland, Ruth continued her love of teaching at Kehilat Shalom where she taught elementary and religious school classes for 25 years. She also enjoyed working part-time in the China department at Woodward and Lorthrop, helping brides creating their wedding registries. Ruth continued teaching Hebrew school at Shaare Torah until 2014 when she retired. She and Mario moved to Millsboro, Delaware where they loved living their retirement years near the eastern shore. In April 2024, Ruth and Mario returned to Maryland to live closer to their children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research or a charity of your choice.
