Stephen J. Horwitz, M.D., passed away peacefully in Urbana, Maryland, on June 14 at the age of 76, with his family by his side. Born in Baltimore on May 10, 1950, Steve earned his undergraduate degree from George Washington University in 1972 and his medical degree from GW School of Medicine in 1976. He completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at GW Hospital in 1980. Steve devoted more than four decades to the practice of medicine. In 1982, he co-founded an OB/GYN practice in D.C., which became the largest private OB/GYN practice in the region. Steve loved caring for his patients and was honored to be part of their lives. The countless letters, cards, photographs and messages he received over the years reflected the lasting impact he made on generations of women and families throughout the Washington area. In 1978, a high school reunion led to a blind date with Emily, who became the love of his life. They married in 1979. Above all else, Steve was devoted to his family. He was a proud father of two and an exceptionally involved grandfather. Steve is survived by his wife, Emily; his daughter, Lauren (Alan); his son, Benjamin (Jackie); grandchildren, Ava, Riley and Braden; and his sister-in-law, Deborah, and her children, Andrea and Jason. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to support prostate cancer research at Johns Hopkins University.
