On the morning of Sept. 28, Susan Weisbord Newman of Rockville, MD, passed away peacefully.
Beloved wife of Neil J. Newman, z”l, devoted mother to Becky (Aaron) Leavey and Amy Rachel Newman. Loving little sister of Marvin Weisbord, z”l and Mimi Weisbord, z”l. Cherished grandmother of Leora and Lila Leavey. Later in life, companion of Martin Norwitz, z”l. Also survived by adoring nieces and nephews, and so many devoted friends.
Born and raised in Philadelphia and a proud Penn State Nittany Lion, Susan’s fondest childhood memories were of summers with her extended family in Atlantic City. She spent the greater part of her professional life serving the Jewish community, as a preschool teacher, administrator for the Consolidated Religious School of Montgomery County, and as the Executive Director of Tikvat Israel Congregation. She also shared her time as the treasurer of her Hadassah chapter and as a guest reader in local elementary school classrooms for many years.
A Phillies fan at heart, she grew to love the Orioles and then the Nationals, and jumped on the Redskins “bandwagon” through the Joe Gibbs years and beyond. She was an avid reader, mah jongg and Scrabble player and enjoyed traveling, especially to London. Musical theater held a special place in her heart, with “Les Misérables” a favorite she returned to see again and again.
Her greatest joy was being Leora and Lila’s grandma! She was so happy to have the girls grow up nearby, which allowed her and her husband Neil, their Zayde, to share countless sleepovers, beach trips and ice cream cones, library visits and everyday adventures together.
