Faith leaders, economists and community advocates will gather in the nation’s capital Thursday to demand tax justice, as the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is set to expire at the end of 2025.

The Washington Interfaith Network aims to unite in the fight to “end tax breaks for the rich and invest in what communities truly need — housing, education, care and economic security,” according to a press release by the Economic Security Project.

Rabbi Hannah Goldstein of Temple Sinai in Washington, D.C., is among the interfaith leaders who will speak at the “People Over Profit: Tax Justice for All” rally in front of the United States Treasury Building on April 10.

Goldstein, who has served the Temple Sinai community since 2013, is committed to social justice work. According to the temple’s website, she is “deeply committed to repairing the world” through her work with Temple Sinai’s Davis Center for Social Justice, which includes working with the Washington Interfaith Network on local issues.

She will join a local pastor and a local imam, as well as economic justice leaders from the DC Fiscal Policy Institute, the Economic Security Project and Economic Policy Institute who want to prioritize working families and communities over corporations and the “ultra-wealthy.”

The rally is a response to congressional budget reconciliation discussions that include proposals for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for billionaires and corporations at the expense of the nation’s working families, according to the press release.

Speakers will discuss how tax policy directly affects housing, health care, education and infrastructure in D.C. communities.

“The interfaith gathering brings together DC residents, faith communities, and community organizations to raise a collective moral voice for a fair tax system that works for everyone,” the press release read. “Federal tax decisions directly impact funding for District programs and services, making this a critical issue for local residents.”

The “People Over Profit” rally will take place in front of the U.S. Treasury Building in Washington, D.C., on April 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
