Her children Stacy Derrick (Gregory), Joseph Bernstein (Natalie), and Nicole Zimmerman (Brian) and her grandchildren Sara Derrick, Matty Derrick, Bella Zimmerman and Zamir Bernstein were the joys of her life. Also survived by her sister-in-law Lois Friedman. She had nieces and nephews, cousins and other family members who she loved.
As everyone knows, she was truly a special and amazing person. She found joy and excitement in everything in life. She loved and made friends with everyone she met. She had many medical issues for many years, but no matter how much pain or issues she had, she always took care of people. Sometimes it was 10 people for dinner. Sometimes it was people in our lives who needed a place to live or just to stay for a little while. During Hurricane Katrina, the house was a refuge; she welcomed in a family that we had never met before because they had nowhere else to go. No matter what, our house was a place for everyone to feel at home, get fed, get advice and know they were loved.
Mom loved art, music and all things that were beautiful. She worked as a personal shopper and art teacher. She was the greatest supporter of her family. Her positivity and will for life kept her going despite being wheelchair-bound for over a decade and fighting medical issues from age 40 and on. If something fun was going on, she wanted to be there. Sheer will let her experience and love life more than most in her situation ever could. We hope that everyone will remember her positivity and love and continue to spread her memory and love to the world. In lieu of flowers, our friends have set up a meal train and donations may be made to Maryland Public Television.
