If you knew the truth about most mattresses, it would “scare your socks off,” said Laura Wallace, vice president at Savvy Rest.
The bedding and furniture company, which just opened their fourth store on Rockville Pike, specializes in giving consumers a natural bedroom. “The mattress industry is poorly regulated,” Wallace explained. “Most mattresses have chemically treated fabrics over synthetic foams that contain V.O.Cs [volatile organic compounds].” Add dangerous pesticides sprayed on the cotton and you’re up-close-and-personal with “toxic junk” — spending sleeping hours breathing in and laying on “low-level chemicals.”
“Once you learn about it, a green light goes off,” she said. Compare that to her company’s products made with natural foam rubber (not a blend) covered by a casing made of certified organic cotton and certified organic wool. No chemicals are needed as the wool is a natural flame retardant. “One way to give your body a respite from the chemical assault is to make sure you have a natural bedroom.”
The layered mattresses allow you to select your density — with each side of the bed individualizing firmness. The company will even allow customers to change out the inserts during the first 90 days to ensure the perfect combination for the perfect level of comfort.
Savvy Rest manufacturers its pillows, mattresses, bedding and platform beds in Charlottesville, “where you can see the mountains.” Founded in 2006 by Michael Penny, Savvy Rest has been on Inc. magazine’s “500/5000” list of the fastest-growing American companies every year since 2010. They now have four company-owned stores and have products in 100 independent retail stores. Locally, Savvy Rest can be found in Vienna and now Rockville. Sheets range in price from $139 to $199 and mattresses $1,649 to $4,099 for a 10” California King Organic Serenity mattress. Crib mattresses and mattress pads are $449 and $99 respectively.
Wallace’s favorite product? The Savvy Woolsy topper — filled with organic wool, “it’s delicious.” And, she claims, “women with hot flashes love it.” The wool batting’s microscopic hooks create air pockets that prevent heat buildup.
