What I inherited from Sinai, at the core of what Judaism means to me, is a collective responsibility. My actions are not a reflection of myself alone, but part of a larger whole. I wear my past and carry the future with me in my entire being. I have never experienced another way. I have no choice but to act with past generations watching and the responsibility of the future on my shoulders.

Carole R. Zawatsky, chief executive officer, Washington DCJCC, joined the Center as CEO on July 1, 2011, after concluding her tenure as the chief program officer for arts, culture and Jewish life at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. Born and raised in suburban Washington, she received her B.A. from the University of Maryland and M.A. from George Washington University. Zawatsky has helped create partnerships while at various institutions including the Skirball Museum at Hebrew Union College, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Jewish Museum in New York City. In 2004, she drew on her passion for the arts and Jewish education to help launch The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in Cleveland – serving there for two years as the founding executive director.
