On Dec. 31, the Jewish Historical Society ushered in the new year with a sold-out First Night Klezmer Concert in its historic 1876 synagogue with the band Machaya. This is the society’s third annual concert, which is made possible in part by a grant from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. “Last Call” programs like this one allow visitors to experience the city’s oldest synagogue before it is moved (again) as part of the Capitol Crossing development. The synagogue, today the Lillian & Albert Small Jewish Museum, was founded by mostly German-Jewish immigrants and once housed services, prayer and music in Yiddish.
