Daniel Schwartz, an 11th-grader at James Madison High School (JMHS) in Vienna, won awards for two musical compositions he submitted to the Northern Virginia Music Teachers’ Association Composition Contest. His first piece, “Daydreaming,” a composition for six clarinets, was one of two selected to be performed at a McLean Symphony concert last month. His second piece, “Golliwogg’s Cakewalk,” which he arranged for clarinet choir (and was originally written for piano by Claude Debussy), along with his original piece, won awards and will be performed by him and other musicians at the honors recital at the Women’s Club of Arlington.
A Gesher Jewish Day School graduate, Daniel is first chair clarinet in the JMHS wind ensemble, plays the baritone saxophone in the school’s jazz band and is a member of the marching band.
