LEARN TO CHANT TORAH BY THE JEWISH NEW YEAR, OR ENHANCE CURRENT SKILLS BY TAKING A DEEPER LOOK AT THE TE’AMIM OR JUST LEARN A NEW MELODY.

TIME+TIME: EVERY SUNDAY, AUGUST 2-SEPT 13, 3-4PM EDT
Classes: August 02, 09, 16, 23, 30, Sept 06, 13
INSTRUCTOR: Isaac Truherz (London)

Western Sephardi Melody for Torah, as Sung in the London Community. TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY to learn or enhance one of the most essential skills of Jewish ritual life: chanting Torah.

Understanding te‘amim, the punctuation around Hebrew text from which we sing melodies, is vital to truly understanding the traditional texts. In this skills-focused course, rather than blindly memorizing swathes of text, we will tackle the te‘amim right from the start.

Classes will be workshop-style, not lectures, with a highly participatory teaching style aiming to give everyone independent practice at reading (with plenty of support).

Very gradually, we will add a few te‘amim to our repertoire each week, learning to independently sight-read them right from the beginning, and with a deep understanding of their syntax and the meanings they convey.

THIS CLASS WELCOMES STUDENTS with no prior experience of Torah reading, STUDENTS with any level of Torah reading ability who want to better understand how the te‘amim actually work, STUDENTS with any level of Torah reading ability in a different custom who wish to learn a new melody, and ANYONE IN-BETWEEN.

COST: NO formal cost to register. However, on a pay-what-you-want basis, you are invited to make a tax deductible donation towards the teacher’s honorarium.
