Harriet Gerber


Harriet Gerber of Rockville, MD, passed away from cancer after a courageous battle. Harriet was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. She graduated from Western High School and received her bachelor’s degree from University of Maryland in College Park.

She is survived by her sister Michelle Michel of Glenville, PA, her niece Dianna Figueroa of North Miami, FL, and many friends. She began her career as a microbiologist at Georgetown University before moving on to the FDA where she worked for over 40 years in a number of capacities. She was still working at the FDA at the time of her death.

Harriet grew beautiful flowers on and next to her patio. She also had a green thumb for her many house plants. She was an excellent cook and cooked meals for many of her friends throughout the years. Harriet was an enthusiastic folk dancer since her teens.

She made many terrific friends through folk dancing. She participated in international, Israeli and Nordic dancing, and attended many folk dance camps and folk dance festivals. Harriet was a talented, creative photographer and took pictures at many of her friends’ weddings, at folk dance events and at charity events.

Harriet also took many pictures in her travels to many parts of the world, which included Thailand, Russia, Tanzania, China, Poland, Scandinavia, the Galapagos Islands, Israel and Turkey. Harriet was a member of Congregation Beth El in Bethesda, MD. Rabbi Deborah Megdal of Beth El officiated at the private memorial service for Harriet in January 2023. Harriet was a loving friend to many.

Her friendships date back to at least age 19, when she met a person who became a close friend for the rest of her life. Harriet made many other good friends through her work, with neighbors and with fellow dancers. Harriet had a generosity of spirit. She is missed by many. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
