Rabbi Janice Garfunkel, age 54, passed away Oct. 25. She was the beloved daughter of Felix and Erica Garfunkel of Dayton, Ohio, devoted mother of Aliza and Eliana Garfunkel, dear sister of David (Isabella) Garfunkel of Closter, N.J., and Michael Garfunkel.
Janice attended the Traditional Egalitarian Minyan at Adas Israel Congregation in the District occasionally for several years in the 1990s and early 2000s. She served as the rabbi at Congregation B’nai Abraham in Hagerstown from 1998 to 2003. She served as the rabbi at Temple Sholom in Springfield, Ohio, near her hometown of Dayton, from 2004 to 2010. Graveside services were held Sunday, Oct. 27, at Beth Jacob Cemetery in Dayton. Memorial contributions may be made to Hebrew Union College.
