JSSA earns top rating – again

For the sixth year in a row, the Jewish Social Service Agency has earned a top four-star rating from Charity Navigator.

Only 3 percent of the organizations rated by Charity Navigator have received six consecutive four-star ratings, according to Ken Berger, president and chief executive officer of the independent Charity Navigator.

“It’s a valuable accomplishment,” said Todd Schenk, JSSA’s CEO. “We are thrilled to receive this mark of quality.”

Charity Navigator evaluates organizations’ fiscal health and accountability and places on its website a great deal of information about the charity, including tax records and names and salaries of employees. Specifically, Charity Navigator examines how responsibly an organization functions day to day and how well positioned it is to sustain its programs.

“It’s hard sometimes for a donor to decide independently if a charity is worthy of their donation,” Schenk said, adding that Charity Navigator is a great help.

By continually receiving a top rating, Charity Navigator is telling donors that JSSA is “a healthy organization,” Schenk said. “It’s about a commitment to our service and our using our money wisely.”

The top rating also assisted Schenk, who just took over as CEO on Sept. 1. “This helped me evaluate the agency” when deciding whether or not to accept the job, he said. “It looked like an organization that was on the up and up.” he

JSSA, a nonsectarian organization in Rockville that helps people with social, emotional and physical challenges, provides care to more than 30,000 people and families annually, Schenk said.
