Light and fun for the shortest days

This was our first Chanukah art contest — until now we’ve only done them for Purim — and we thank everyone who sent in their artwork. They abound with light and fun.

We congratulate the six winners, whose creations are on these pages: Ruby Goldman, Sadie Hosid, Maya Meushaw, Ava Posin, Ella Soloveichik and Levi Yonteff.

We chose Levi Yonteff’s painting of a moose-chanukiah in a snowy wilderness for this week’s cover. Levy, 5, who is a student at the Leo Bernstein Jewish Academy of Fine Arts in Silver Spring, draws and paints all the time, says his father, Jeremy Yonteff.

“One of the most difficult things for him to do is not drawing or painting on Shabbos,” he says.
With the days at their shortest, we can use all the light we can get.

Happy Chanukah!
