On Jan. 11, Nathan Robert “Bob” Ackerman, 100, of Chevy Chase, died Jan. 11 at home, surrounded by his children.

He served as a B-26 bombardier with the 344th Bomb Group and he flew 66 missions inclusive of D-Day. He was awarded the Purple Heart and numerous other air medals. After his World War II service, he opened A&R Auto Parts in 1949 and served the Washington community for 60 years.

He was the beloved husband of the late Muriel Ackerman; devoted father of Michael and Richard (Ilene) Ackerman, Joanne (Arnold) Kieffer and Nancy (Michael) Krzyzanowski; dear brother of Lester (Leona) Ackerman; and loving grandfather of Evan, David, Sara, Jacob, Adrienne, Olivia, Alisa, Tasha, Ace, Hannah and Mikey; and great-grandfather of two.

Memorial contributions may be made to the 344th Bomb Group Association.
