It is hard to believe, but you can indeed retire and live well on a budget in Montgomery County. This two-bedroom, 1.5 bath condo in Leisure World, listed at $95,000, is an ideal example.

Located on the first floor of a four-level, garden-style, elevator building called The Pines, this spacious unit boasts 953 square feet of living space, an outdoor covered patio and small private garden.

Upon entering, one can see through the entire length of the unit and out the large sliding-glass doors in the living room to the patio. The roomy kitchen opens to the living room and can fit a small kitchen table. The comfortable living room, separate dining room and patio make for effortless entertaining of family and friends.

Each unit in this building includes many modern amenities, making life uncomplicated and enjoyable — including a private stack washer/dryer, a walk-in master bedroom closet, central air conditioning and heat, a half bathroom for guests and extra storage.

The Pines building is a pleasant, quiet, well-maintained, no-frills building tucked away off North Leisure World Boulevard. The building features a covered entryway with easy handicap-accessible pickup and drop-off. The lobby was recently updated with new tile floors and furnishings, and the roof is currently being replaced.

The monthly condo fee of $446 covers water and sewer; trash and snow removal; basic cable TV; building maintenance; lawn maintenance; master insurance policy; security and more.

During my visit to the building, residents were gathering informally to visit and chat in the lobby. There were notices posted in the elevator about the Labor Day picnic and the upcoming monthly condo association meeting. Each floor features a sitting nook nearby the elevators, which also boast new tile floors and furnishings.

Leisure World of Maryland is a private, gated community restricted to residents aged 55 and older and caters to those seeking “relaxed, self-reliant living.” The community features condos, co-ops, single-family homes and townhomes.

Amenities at Leisure World include an 18-hole golf course, two clubhouses, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, dining facilities, a medical center and bus transportation.

There are endless choices of classes and groups to join at no cost or at affordable below-market rates — from exercise and dance classes to book clubs and religious study groups. It is readily apparent that Leisure World is designed and managed to encourage residents to gather and socialize.

The last two-bedroom, 1.5 bath unit in The Pines to sell settled for only $82,000 and included an updated kitchen. At the asking price of $95,000, unit #117 is currently overpriced and still needs a renovation of the kitchen and baths.

Nonetheless, it still serves as an example that leisurely retirement living can be easy on the pocketbook in Montgomery County.
