David Zatz


David Zatz died on Dec 29. He was born in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 23, 1930, to Ben and Rose Zatz. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Natalie (Dosik) Zatz. Devoted father of Debra Zatz, Pamela Rothenstein (David) and Benjamin Zatz (Megan). Cherished Zayde of Reed Kronen, Lindsey and Adam Rothenstein and Zachary, Hannah and Oliver Zatz. He will also be forever remembered by his nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his dear sisters, Anne Abel (Edward) and Dorothy Cohen (Morris).
Dave was all-high first baseman at Eastern High School and received an athletic scholarship to play baseball at the University of Maryland. While in school, his National Guard unit was activated during the Korean War and he was assigned to Camp Edwards in Massachusetts, where he played on the camp baseball team as the only position player without professional experience.
After Army service, he returned to the University of Maryland and received the Burger Trophy as the outstanding senior baseball player. After receiving his bachelor of science degree, Dave attended George Washington University, where he received master of science and doctorate of education degrees. He was an elementary school teacher and principal in Prince Georges County for 27 years. He also served as an associate professor in the College of General Studies at the George Washington University. Dave then founded and served as president of Edmuat Inc., which generates funds for area schools through a variety of funding methods and disseminates educational materials to elementary school principals, teachers and parents.
