On Dec. 21, Scott Kahalas of Darnestown became a bar mitzvah at Shaare Torah in Gaithersburg. Joining in the simcha were his parents Kelli and Richard, siblings Bradley and Casey and grandparents Maris and Arnold Binder of Potomac and Bryna and Sheldon Kahalas of Rockville. For his bar mitzvah project, Scott collected used/new sports equipment that was donated to Leveling the Playing Field, an organization that provides equipment to at-risk youth in and around Montgomery County. Scott is a seventh-grader at Lakelands Park Middle School in Gaithersburg.
