Esther Safran Foer resigned from her position as the executive director of Washington’s Sixth & I Historic Synagogue Thursday via an email distributed to the community. Heather Moran, an executive at the National Geographic Channel, will replace Foer on Sept. 6.
Foer, who held the position for 10 years, said she intends to remain involved with the synagogue as a senior advisor and eventually a member of the board. The email did not specify her reason for resigning, but said she intends to spend more time with her grandchildren as well as begin writing a book with one of her sons.
“When I first came to Sixth & I, our mission was to create something new, something that would fill the shell of a beautiful, historic structure, even though we were unsure of what the ‘something’ was going to be,” said the email. “Today, Sixth & I is a respected, even emulated, national and international model where culture and spirituality intersect to create new pathways for community building and Jewish engagement.”
