Sylvia Sperling Nazdin, 93, died at Casey House Hospice on May 21. Born in 1921 in New York City and a graduate of Hunter College in 1942, she always considered herself a New Yorker, although she lived in Silver Spring since her marriage to Leo Nazdin in 1952. They enjoyed retirement in Boynton Beach, Fla., until they returned to live full time at Leisure World, Silver Spring.

Sylvia had been a teacher in New York before her marriage, was fond of opera and musicals, acted and directed in community theater and loved to cook. She enjoyed travel with her husband Leo, especially to Italy and England, and hosted many family gatherings at her home at Leisure World, even in recent weeks. Husband Leo and brother Allen Sperling predeceased her. She is survived by her children, Joel (Carolyn Chamberlain Nazdin) of Washington, D.C., Robert of La Plata, Jon (Kathryn Williams) of Silver Spring and Daniel (Christine Lade) of Sydney, Australia; four grandsons, Brendan, Nicholas, Andrew and Yosef Nazdin; daughter-in-law, Margaret Diver; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 23 at Judean Memorial Gardens Chapel in Olney. Memorial contributions may be made to Silver Spring Stage, Montgomery County Hospice or the Leukemia Foundation. Arrangements by Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, Inc. under Jewish Funeral Practices Committee of Greater Washington contract.
