Temple Rodef Shalom is launching an initiative that brings Jewish life to residents of northern Virginia senior living communities, with the goal of expanding Jewish outreach to older adults in the region.

The Falls Church synagogue also welcomed back Cantor Allen Leider as the congregation’s new senior living coordinator.

Leider served TRS for the past 18 years, leading adult education and inspiring learners before his retirement earlier this year. In this role, he will “share his love of Judaism and his gift for connection with residents” in local senior living communities, according to a press release.

“I’m super excited about this new initiative,” the cantor said in a statement to Washington Jewish Week. “It’s a great way for me (in my retirement) to continue to serve our TRS members and the whole Northern [Virginia] Jewish community.”

He spoke about the region’s growing population of older adults and their needs.

“Senior residents sometimes feel lonely and disconnected from their faith communities,” Leider said. “We’re going to build a system where volunteers and I will be able to bring them connection and caring, Jewish observance and learning through Shabbat services, holiday programs and educational opportunities.”

Leider said he most looks forward to engaging with the staff and Jewish residents of local senior living communities, a continuation of his previous role at TRS. “As a cantor, I love to facilitate celebrations, services and learning experiences,” he said. “Developing deeper connections will bring added meaning to the lives of the residents and for me as well.”

“This is sacred work,” Stefanie Bloom, TRS’ director of caring, said in a statement. “Jewish life and learning should be accessible to everyone, wherever they live. We have a beautiful opportunity to build relationships, bring comfort and joy, and help older adults feel deeply connected to Jewish community.”

Alongside Leider, TRS clergy and volunteers will partner with area senior living communities to lead Shabbat celebrations, holiday programming and Jewish learning experiences.
